Measuring for a New Appliance: Doorways, Clearances and Why Listing Dimensions Mislead

The most expensive appliance mistake is not buying the wrong features. It is buying something that does not fit, or that fits the alcove but cannot get through the front door. Large appliances are frequently non returnable once uncrated, and delivery crews will not remove trim or doors for you. Here is how to measure properly, and why the dimensions printed in an online listing are a poor place to start.

Why listing dimensions are unreliable

Marketplace listings pull a Product Dimensions field from supplier data, and that field is not standardized. Sometimes it describes the appliance. Sometimes it describes the shipping carton. Sometimes it is simply wrong, and nobody catches it because it is not the field people read.

The examples are easy to find. The listing for the GE GTD42EASJWW dryer gives Product Dimensions as 1 by 1 by 1 inches for a 7.2 cubic foot appliance. The listing for the GE JVM3160DFWW over the range microwave gives an item weight of 3.94 pounds for a unit that mounts to wall studs. The listing for the Sharp SMD2470ASY microwave drawer gives dimensions of 9 by 15 by 8 inches while also stating a 24 inch width in the product name and a weight of 74 pounds. None of those can be true.

Even when the numbers are plausible, the order is not fixed. The listing for the GE JVM3160DFCC gives Product Dimensions of 33.5 by 19.4 by 20.2 inches, which is a shipping carton, while the same listing text separately gives the appliance itself as 15.25 deep, 16.5 high and 29.875 wide. Both sets of numbers are in the same listing. Only one of them is the microwave. The Samsung RS27T5200SR refrigerator listing gives 76 by 38 by 36 inches with no labels at all, so you cannot tell which figure is height without checking the manufacturer.

The rule that follows is simple. Use the manufacturer’s own specification sheet or installation instructions for the exact model number. Treat everything else as a rough guide.

Measure the opening, not the appliance

  • Measure width at the top, the middle and the bottom of the opening. Walls are rarely parallel, and the smallest of the three is your real width.
  • Measure height from the finished floor, including any tile lip or transition strip, to the underside of the counter or the shelf above.
  • Measure depth from the back wall to the front edge of the counter, and note whether the counter overhangs.
  • Find the outlet, the water shutoff and the drain, and note where they sit. A pipe stub in the middle of the back wall can steal two inches of depth.
  • Subtract the clearance the manufacturer specifies. Appliances need air gaps, and those figures are on the installation sheet.

Depth is measured several ways, and only one of them matters

Manufacturers publish more than one depth figure and they are not interchangeable. Cabinet depth is the box. Depth with handles adds the handle projection. Depth with the door open is a much larger number and is the one that decides whether you can stand in front of the machine.

Electrolux lists the compact Electrolux ELFW4222AW at 25 inches deep, rising to 42 inches with the door open 90 degrees. LG gives a depth with the door open of 57.75 inches for the LG WashCombo WM6998HBA. If your hallway closet is 30 inches from the back wall to the opposite wall, the cabinet fits and the door does not.

Depth is also where refrigerator shopping goes wrong. GE lists the counter depth GE GZS22IYNFS at 30 and 3/4 inches deep, against 35 and 7/8 inches for the standard depth GE GNE27JYMFS. Five inches decides whether the doors sit flush with your cabinet fronts or stand well proud of them. Dryers publish a closet depth figure for the same reason, and LG cites a 30 inch depth for the LG DLG3401W specifically so it clears second floor closets.

Door swing needs floor space you have not measured

A refrigerator door has to open past 90 degrees before the crisper drawers will clear the gasket and slide out. If the appliance sits next to a wall or in a corner, that swing is blocked and the drawers become unusable even though the refrigerator fits. Manufacturers publish the required side clearance for this, and it is often two or three inches. French door and side by side layouts need less swing room than a single wide door, which is often the deciding factor in a galley kitchen.

The same applies to a dishwasher door dropping into a walkway, a front load washer door swinging into a doorway, and an oven door meeting an island.

The delivery path is a separate measurement

Refrigerator doors can usually be removed for delivery, which buys several inches, but that is a documented procedure in the installation instructions and not every model allows it. Weight matters too. GE lists the GE Profile PVD28BYNFS at 388 pounds. That is a two person appliance dolly and floor protection, not a helpful neighbor.

Built in and under counter appliances have stricter rules

A freestanding appliance only has to fit. A built in appliance has to fit a specified rough opening, which is a different discipline. Standard built in dishwashers expect a 24 inch wide opening roughly 34 inches high, compact and ADA models expect 18 inches, and both figures assume a finished floor. Over the range microwaves have a specified distance from the cooking surface to the underside of the unit, a specified cabinet depth above, and a mounting plate that has to hit studs.

New flooring is a common trap. Adding tile or a floating floor raises the finished floor and can leave an existing under counter appliance permanently trapped, or a new one an eighth of an inch too tall to slide in. Measure after the floor goes down, not before.

A checklist worth ten minutes

  • Write the model number down and download that model’s specification sheet and installation instructions.
  • Measure the opening three ways for width and record the smallest.
  • Record depth with handles and depth with the door open, separately.
  • Check the side clearance needed for doors and drawers to clear.
  • Walk the delivery path with a tape measure and note the narrowest point.
  • Confirm the outlet type, the water shutoff and the drain are where the installation sheet expects them.
  • Note the shipping weight and decide who is moving it.
