A countertop dishwasher solves a specific problem: you rent, you cannot plumb anything, and washing by hand every night has stopped being acceptable. It solves that problem genuinely well within limits that the marketing tends to skip. The limits are about plate diameter, faucet threads and drying, and they are worth knowing before the box arrives.
Capacity, and why the plate diameter matters more than the place settings
Countertop dishwashers are usually rated at four to six place settings. A place setting is a defined bundle, roughly a dinner plate, a side plate, a bowl, a cup and saucer, a glass and a set of cutlery. Six place settings sounds like a lot until you realize it assumes each item is the standard size the rating uses.
The constraint that bites is plate diameter. These machines have a small rack and a spray arm that has to clear it, so the maximum plate is commonly around 10 to 10.5 inches. Plenty of modern dinner plates are 11 or 12 inches across and simply will not slot in. The listing for the Farberware FCD06SDWHT is unusually explicit about this, stating suitability for pots and pans up to 10 inches in diameter. Measure your largest plate before ordering. It is a five second check that prevents the most common return.
Cabinet clearance is the other measurement. These machines are tall for a countertop appliance. The HAVA countertop dishwasher is listed at roughly 16.8 by 16.7 by 18 inches, and the HAVA TDJR09 at about 16.9 by 16.8 by 18.1 inches. A standard gap between countertop and upper cabinet is around 18 inches, so a machine of that height either does not fit at all or fits with no room to lift a lid. Check whether your chosen model opens as a front door or a top lid, because the two need clearance in completely different directions.
Two hookup methods, and the one that fails
There are two ways these machines get water, and the difference decides whether the appliance works in your kitchen at all.
Faucet adapter. A quick connect fitting screws onto the faucet spout where the aerator normally sits, and a hose runs from there to the machine. This is fast and gives the machine as much water as it wants. It requires a faucet with a standard threaded aerator. Pull down and pull out sprayer faucets, many touchless faucets and a good number of modern designer faucets have no usable thread, and no adapter in the box will change that. Unscrew your aerator and look before you buy.
Built in reservoir. The machine holds its own water and you fill it with a pitcher. The HAVA models above list a built in water tank alongside the hose connection, and the Farberware FDW05WHA lists a water consumption figure of five liters, which is roughly the tank volume a single cycle needs. Filling by hand is tedious but it removes the faucet compatibility problem entirely, and it lets the machine sit somewhere other than beside the sink.
Draining is simpler and less flexible. Almost all of these units drain by gravity through a hose that has to hang into the sink, lower than the machine. The TDJR09 listing gives both its inlet and outlet hoses as 61 inches, which is your real placement radius.

Where the listings go wrong
The electrical fields in this category are unreliable enough to be worth naming. The Farberware FCD06SDWHT listing records its voltage as 680 volts and its annual energy consumption as 680 watts. Neither is a coherent figure: 680 is almost certainly the machine’s wattage, dropped into two fields where it does not belong. The HAVA TDJR09 listing gives 220 volts and an energy consumption of 950 kilowatts, while separately quoting 150 kilowatt hours per year and 60 hertz. A domestic countertop dishwasher sold for United States outlets runs on 120 volts, and 950 kilowatts is roughly the draw of a small factory.
The HAVA TDQR07 and the TDQR share dimensions and appear to be closely related models sold under different suffixes. Treat every electrical number in this category as unverified and read the plate on the back of the actual machine.
What they cannot do
Big items. Baking sheets, roasting pans, stockpots and large mixing bowls do not fit, and one oversized item blocks the spray arm for everything else in the load.
Heavy soil without scraping. Full size dishwashers grind or filter food debris. Countertop units have a small filter and no disposer, so anything more than a rinse of residue ends up redistributed or clogging the filter. Scraping is not optional here.
Dry plastics. Most of these machines dry by residual heat and condensation rather than a heating element or a fan. Ceramic and glass hold enough heat to evaporate their own water. Plastic does not, so it comes out wet. Opening the door at the end of the cycle and letting steam escape helps more than any setting.
Run unattended in a busy kitchen. The drain hose occupies the sink, and if the machine uses a faucet adapter, so does the faucet. The sink is out of service for the length of the cycle, which can be well over an hour on a heavy program.
Stay quiet in a studio. The HAVA listings quote 60 decibels. That is normal for the class and roughly conversation level, which is fine in a separate kitchen and noticeable in an open plan apartment at night.
When to skip the countertop route
If you can plumb, even in a rental with permission, an 18 inch built in is a substantially different machine: more capacity, a real drying system, a proper filter and much lower noise. The Frigidaire FFBD1831US is an 18 inch unit with dual spray arms designed for exactly this narrow slot. If sound is your priority, quieter full size machines such as the Bosch SHEM63W55N or the Bosch SHPM78Z55N are a different experience entirely, and worth comparing across the built in dishwasher category.
For renters who cannot modify anything, the countertop machine remains the honest answer, in the same way a portable washing machine is the honest answer to apartment laundry: not as good as the plumbed version, dramatically better than doing it by hand. Compare capacities and hookup types across the countertop dishwasher category, and measure your plates and your faucet thread first.
One last note on power. These machines heat their own water, which is where most of their electricity goes. As general guidance, kitchen countertop receptacles in the United States are typically 120 volt circuits rated at 15 or 20 amps, and running a dishwasher’s heating stage at the same time as a kettle or a toaster oven on one circuit is a common way to trip a breaker. Give it an outlet that is not already busy.
