Capacity is the number every washer listing leads with, and it is also the one buyers misread most often. A cubic foot figure describes the volume of the drum. It does not describe how many pounds of laundry the machine will clean well, how big a comforter it will handle, or how much room the appliance needs in your house. Here is how to read the number and how to size a washer from your actual laundry rather than from the box.

What the cubic foot figure measures

Washer capacity is the internal volume of the wash drum, measured to a published industry method so that figures compare reasonably well between brands. It is drum volume, not usable load volume. Nothing in that measurement accounts for the fact that clothes need free space to tumble, or that an agitator in a top loader occupies part of the tub while an impeller machine leaves the middle open.

Capacity and washer type are linked

You cannot pick capacity independently of design. Compact front loaders in the 24 inch class top out around 2.4 cubic feet, which is where the Electrolux above sits.
