Description

The Vitamix E310 Explorian is Vitamix’s entry point, and it is worth understanding what that means. Vitamix lists ten variable speeds, a pulse feature, a 48 ounce container, hardened stainless steel blades, self cleaning, a radial cooling fan with a thermal protection system, and a five year full warranty covering parts, labor and return shipping both ways. The unit measures 8 inches wide, 11 inches deep and 18 inches high, weighs 10.5 pounds, runs on 120 volts and is made in the USA.

Vitamix’s own positioning is unusual in that it argues against horsepower as a selling point. Its stated case is that the whole blending system, motor, blade and container geometry together, produces the blend rather than raw motor power. That is a reasonable engineering argument and it is also why Vitamix does not lead with a wattage figure the way Ninja does.

Variable Speed Control and What It Buys

Ten variable speeds is the feature that separates a Vitamix from a four speed blender, and it is not a specification sheet distinction. Starting low and ramping up prevents a thick mixture from cavitating, where the blade spins in an air pocket instead of the food. It also allows a coarse chop to be held at a coarse chop, which is what makes chunky salsa possible in a machine that can also produce a completely smooth purée.

The pulse feature layers on top of that, letting coarse chopped texture be laid over a smooth base for heartier recipes. Vitamix’s example is a chunky vegetable soup, which is exactly the kind of result a preset program blender cannot produce.

The hardened stainless steel blades are described as aircraft grade and designed for the toughest ingredients. Notably, Vitamix blades are not razor sharp: the machine works by driving blunt blades at very high speed, which shears rather than slices. That is why a Vitamix container is safer to reach into than a Ninja pitcher and why the blades stay effective for years without sharpening.

The 48 Ounce Container

This is the main compromise in the Explorian line, and it is a real one. A 48 ounce container is smaller than the 64 and 72 ounce vessels on most competing machines, and Vitamix describes it as ideal for medium batches for small family meals. Two large smoothies is comfortable. Four is not.

The container also affects what the machine can do well. A smaller vessel with a tall narrow profile creates a better vortex for small quantities than a wide 72 ounce pitcher does, so the E310 is actually better than a large blender at handling a single portion. The included mini tamper is used to push ingredients into the blade path in thick mixtures without stopping the machine, which is how nut butters and very thick frozen blends are made.

At 18 inches high with the container fitted, this will not stand under a wall cabinet with the standard 18 inch gap. Vitamix’s A3300 Ascent addresses that with a low profile 64 ounce container at 17 inches.

Self Cleaning, Cooling and Warranty

Self cleaning is a genuine convenience. Warm water and a drop of dish soap blended at the highest speed cleans the container in 30 to 60 seconds without disassembly. Because the blade is fixed rather than removable, there is nothing to take apart and nothing sharp to handle.

The radial cooling fan and thermal protection system are the features that let the machine run hard without burning out. Thermal protection shuts the motor down before damage rather than after, which is the difference between a machine that survives an overloaded batch and one that does not.

The five year full warranty covers parts, labor and return shipping both ways. That is a substantive commitment and it stands in clear contrast to the undated limited warranties on most competing blenders.

Things To Consider

The 48 ounce container is the main limitation and it should decide the purchase. A household making four smoothies at a time will find it too small, and the answer is a larger container or a different model rather than a workaround.

At 18 inches high it will not sit under a standard wall cabinet, which for a machine intended to live on the counter is a real placement problem.

Vitamix does not publish a wattage or amperage figure in this listing, only 120 volts. That is consistent with the company’s stated position on horsepower but it does make direct comparison against a Ninja BL610 at 1000 watts and 12.5 amps impossible on power.

The included components are listed inconsistently. The feature bullets say motor base, 48 ounce container and mini tamper. The specification table says motor base, juice container, tamper and cookbook. Whether a printed cookbook is in the box is not settled by the listing.

There are no preset programs, no timer and no touchscreen. Everything is manual, which is a strength for control and a weakness for consistency across different users. Vitamix machines are also loud: no noise rating is published here, and the quieter option in the range is the Vitamix Quiet One.

Who It Suits and Who Should Look Elsewhere

This suits a one or two person household, or a cook who values control over convenience: someone making soups, sauces, nut butters, purées and single portion smoothies rather than four smoothies at a time. The variable speed control, the tamper and the five year full warranty are the three things that justify the price over a cheaper machine, and self cleaning removes the main daily friction of owning a blender.

It is the wrong blender for family sized batches and the wrong blender for a kitchen with an 18 inch cabinet gap. Households wanting capacity should look at the 64 ounce Vitamix A3300 or a 72 ounce Ninja, and anyone who mainly makes frozen smoothies and does not need fine control will get more capacity for less money elsewhere in the countertop blender range.
